The story of the 2009-2010 San Jose Sharks goes much deeper than just that. So far in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs the Sharks might as well be known as the ‘redeem team’.
This team continues to talk about how they play for this season and that the disappointing playoff runs of the past couple seasons are water under the bridge. But make no mistake about it, as far as Sharks fans are concerned this years successful run through the first two rounds of the National Hockey League’s gauntlet means so much more because of last years first round historic exit.
It is becoming all to routine to Bay Area sports fans, who are searching for their first major sports championship since the 49ers won the Superbowl in 1995. With April comes a couple things, the start of baseball and a disappointing Sharks performance to come in the upcoming weeks after watching them dominate the NHL all season long. Not so fast.
After a Sharks loss in game 1 of the opening round of the playoffs at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Sharks fans were ready to hit the panic button. After watching their best defenseman Dan Boyle score on his own goalie to go down two games to one in the series in Denver, Sharks fans had all but given up. Fan Jefferson Eberheardt when asked at a local viewing party said “they’re the most depressing team in sports, so much potential and always fall on their face when it matters most”. Here we go again? Not so fast. After their game three meltdown Sharks Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic said “I think we will respond easily from this, guys were disappointed coming into the locker room but still positive in what we did out there tonight.” (sharks.nhl.tv)
Then the new Sharks showed up. The team reeled off six wins in a row. Putting away the Colorado Avalanche and doing something most Sharks fans would have only dreamed of, starting a series with a three games to none advantage over the Detroit Redwings. Yes, those Redwings. That great wall of hockey the Sharks always seem to run straight into. Yes, those Redwings that play in that building. The Joe. Joe Louis Arena. The building the San Jose Sharks for years have always failed in.
So a two game lead was great, so what. The Sharks still needed to go to Detroit and win one there. Because history showed the Redwings would win both games there to tie up the series and bring it back to San Jose for a critical final 3 games. So with one team looking to take a commanding 3-0 series lead and one team fighting for their season hanging in the balance, Detroit came out swinging taking a quick 3-1 lead. In seasons past Sharks fans would be moaning going into a third period trailing by two goals, already giving up on the game. But these 2010 Sharks are different. They have a few new players and a whole new attitude, they play a full 60 minutes. The 2010 Sharks scored two late goals to force an overtime period and seal their fate for the third round. It was fitting that in the overtime period the two most criticized Sharks combined for the most important goal of the playoff run thus far. Joe Thornton made a perfectly placed pass for former captain Patrick Marleau who pounded the game winning goal into the back of the net for the 4-3 victory, and a three games to none series lead. A game four beat down of the Sharks would be the only shining moment Redwings would have to smile about, forcing a game five back at San Jose’s Shark tank. In front of the most energetic Sharks crowd of the season the Sharks would again fight back with their new attitude with a come from behind victory 2-1, and series win. Sharks Fan Tommy Lamanna who attended the game said “it was the loudest building I’ve ever been in, the fans stayed energetic the whole game believing the Sharks would come back to win”.
Now comes this, for the second time in franchise history the San Jose Sharks will play in the Western Conference finals. Its one step away from playing for sports most celebrated prize, the Stanley Cup. The match up that was inevitable all season long is here. The number one seed vs. the number two seed. No surprises in the west, the Chicago Blackhawk’s are coming to town and with the Sharks reputation and playoff history are heavily favored to upset the Sharks and win the series. Not so fast.
This year the hockey world might be in for a Shark’s surprise.

A Los Gatos family is breathing a huge sigh of relief tonight when a huge member of their family was returned home. 10-year-old Athena Muzumdar was reunited with her 22 year old Arabian horse named Star.
Star was first noticed as a skinny, white horse running loose down highway 17 two weeks ago. Star was eventually caught and taken to a San Martin animal shelter. Humane society officials were originally unsure of whether to release the horse back to the family in fear the animal was mistreated, but Athena's family along with Stars former owner reassured the shelter that the horse has had health and weight problems in the past.
Star being new to the family is not believed to be loyal to the herd yet, and when given the opportunity to run free took full advantage. The alleged suspect responsible behind sliding open the locks on the medal gates to the corral, a pony named Oreo.

Topical Blog Post 4-24-10
Readers of The Argus woke up to a newspaper Wednesday morning and read an alarming front page story about Fremont resident and CSU Chico student body president Joseph Igbineweka who was stabbed several times in the upper body last weekend. The suspect and man in custody was named 19-year old Barry Sayavong, and the crime was named as a hate crime.
Fast forward to Saturday, the back page of The Argus prints a story where the title reads "Teen arrested for stabbing at Chico State wants apology". Sayavong's attorney, Tracy Tully-Davis says her client was a victim of having his "reputation smeared". She goes on to say that a lawsuit could be pending and that "at this point he just wants to get back to school and for someone to take responsibility for the defamatory comments regarding his character".
In another one of my classes we have been discussing Libel a lot lately and without being able to really prove that Sayavong was the actual offender in this case it was probably unprofessional and not smart to say the least for the Chico Police Department to release their suspects name, and for newspapers like The Argus to move forward in publishing the story the way they did.
You could certainly see where Sayavong is coming from, being labeled a racist as the offender in case where someone is beaten and stabbed walking home from a party. Some of the facts also printed in The Argus have you wondering why he was ever arrested to begin with. In the two stories they went on to say there was only one witness that could positively ID Sayavong as the suspect, the victim himself couldn't even positively ID the 19-year old as the stabber. Sayavong's attorney also pointed out that his victim had no blood on him at the time of his arrest that night, which is nearly impossible for a crime including the number of stab wounds Igbineweka suffered last weekend.
This story shows you that law enforcement agencies and newspapers need to be careful to come out with all the facts in the case and publish that information so quickly. You could incorrectly label a guy a racist and tarnish some one's reputation forever.

Magazine Blog Post
At the pinnacle of all sports magazines there is the one that matters more than any other, Sports Illustrated. In my opinion Sports Illustrated is taken most seriously in the sports journalism for it's track record lasting more than 55 years. The photography is second to none, and its journalist are considered the best in the business, I know most sports writers would leave any other job when offered to jump on board with Sports Illustrated.
The target audience in my opinion is males about 18-45 years old, and it is estimated that out of the 23 million subscribers, 18 million are men. Meaning nearly 20 percent of men read the magazine. (wikipedia.com)
Unlike other media genre's in this category, namely sports radio that spends a lot of it's energy on topics that include pop culture and women to fill air time, Sports Illustrated has always taken pride in it's professionalism. For the most part, Sports Illustrated will always give you a real, deep insight into a sports story for the purpose of showing what is significant about that issue.
